LM 79 Testing Lab and Need and Methods
What Is LM 79 Testing (Lab)?
LM-79 Testing Lab is an approved method for taking
electrical and photometric measurements of SSL products. It covers total flux
(light output), electrical power, efficacy, chromaticity, and intensity
distribution. The five required metrics on the LED Lighting Facts label come
from LM-79 Test Labs results.
(IES) Illuminating Engineering Society of North
America Publishes LM 79-80 In 2008 Approved Methods for the Electrical and
Photometric Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products. Is also Know as LM 79 Testing?
LM-79 Testing captures performance
characteristics of products that feature solid-state lighting (SSL) technology,
including light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This testing provides a snapshot of
performance under specified operating conditions at some point in the life of a
product, usually at the beginning of operation— these are referred to as
initial measurements. It does not address lifetime ratings, changing
performance over time (e.g., lumen maintenance), or LED case temperature.
The LM-79 TestingMethod is applicable to integrated LED products, such as luminaires and
replacement lamps. It is not applicable to LED packages, modules, or arrays
LM-79
Testing Lab requires complete luminaire testing on an absolute photometric
basis. Typically lighting products are evaluated on a relative photometric
basis, where separate tests are done for lamps an luminaires. However, for
solid state lighting products the LED lamps typically cannot be separated from
their luminaires. The absolute photometric testing required measures the light
distribution and light intensity of the complete luminaire.
Need LM-79 Testing certification Testing?
KC India
Test Laboratories has received many recent test requests looking for electrical
certification testing, including LM-79Testing Standards for performance of LED’s.
LM-79 is
the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved
method for taking electrical and photometric measurements of Solid-State
Lighting (SSL) products. LM-79 measures a luminaire or integral lamp as a
system and measures light output (flux), electrical power, chromaticity,
efficacy, and intensity distribution using standard processes and equipment. These
five required metrics are mandatory on LED Lighting Facts labels and come from
the results of LM-79 testing.
Some of the recent electrical
certification test requests KC India Laboratory has received include:
- Electrical Laboratory needed for
IES Testing of LED Light fittings to Illuminating Engineering Society of
North America (IES), LM79 Approved
Method for the Electrical and Photometric
Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products.
- LED rechargeable night light
designer is using a China manufacturer and needs Asia laboratory for
certification testing.
- LM 79 Testing Lab needed for handheld LED flashlight testing for lux and
candela output. The test will include between 1 – 3 lights. The
Flashlights will be tested using White Light, Green Light and Red Light.
Lab needs to be certified and accredited as an authority for testing lux
and candela according to the FL-1 Standard.
- Electrical compliance
laboratory needed to test LED Christmas lights to obtain certificate of
conformity if Christmas light pass safety test
What are the LM-79 test outcomes ?
IESNA prescribes
the following uniform parameters to present the data obtained during LM-79 testing.

What are the limitations of LM-79 Testing?
LM-79
Testing specifies
the parameters of individual products and the test data obtained cannot be used
to evaluate similar products and carry out lighting calculations.LM-79 Testing does not specify any
sampling size. Not specifying the number of samples to be tested leads to
manufacturers providing only one sample instead of providing more, thus
increasing the vulnerability of lesser quality products.
KC India Test Laboratories is a state of art testing facility in the Electrical and Electronics discipline, promoted by KC India, located in India. KC India has a testing facility embedded with Modern Technology for Luminaries Testing, Electrical Testing, LM 79 Testing, IP Testing IT Testing.
KC India
follows internationally accepted practice and protocols for the compliance of
Indian and international standards with accurate, prompt and reliable test
results. KC India complies With ISO
International Standard For Testing Laboratories, Accredited By NABL
(National Accreditation Board For Testing And Calibration Laboratories) and is
recognized By BIS – Bureau Of Indian Standards Under Notified Categories Of
Electronic Products Under The “Electronics And IT Goods” (Requirements For Compulsory
Registration) Order, Of Government Of India, Department Of Electronics And IT.
As the development of LED technology continues to grow and diversify, the
need for consistent and standardized testing procedures for LED has become more
prevalent than ever. KC India is NABL Accredited laboratory for the LM 79 Testing, Luminaire Testing
.
KC India Test Laboratories LLP has made strides to stay current
with the new testing standard LM-79 Testing and Luminaire Testing set
forth by the IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America). In
addition, “KCIndia” testing is now a priority when testing our LED light
systems for more reliable results.
